International students in the ESL program at Kiski are in an ideal language learning situation as they are surrounded by native speakers 24 hours a day, and they are expected to do their best to use English at all times. Most of these students intend to go to American colleges and universities, most of which require the TOEFL as part of the entrance requirement. This is an added incentive for these students to learn English to the best of their ability.
ESL: Literature & Composition
This course is designed to serve as a bridge between English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and mainstream English classes. In this class students will work on their listening and speaking through daily exercises. Intensive writing, focusing on sentence and paragraph formation as well as essay writing, is designed to prepare the students for the more complex writing assignments they will encounter beyond ESL, whether at Kiski or at the college level. Writing is supplemented by the study of novels containing complex grammatical structures. The goal is for students to join the English program as quickly as possible.
